Eldest
The Penultimate:
Eldest is the second book in the Inheritance trilogy; it takes place
after Eragon and will precede the events in Book Three and Four. It was published by
Alfred A. Knopf publishers in a hardcover format with 681 pages. It includes
a summary of Eragon, the story itself, a language guide, and an
acknowledgements section. The cover, featuring the dragon Thorn, was illustrated
by John Jude Palencar, like Eragon. It was published on August 23, 2005.
Eldest almost instantly became the #1 New York Times
bestseller in August of 2005, even knocking Harry Potter and the Half-Blood
Prince off the #1 spot.
Eldest differed from Eragon in several ways.
In Eldest there were multiple character perspectives- Eragon’s of course,
and new to this book was Roran’s point of view and Nasuada’s. So while the
reader still followed Eragon’s training, it was revealed what was going on with
the villagers in Carvahall and what the Varden was up to.
The Next Step:
Like Eragon, Eldest has a Deluxe Edition.
However, instead of calling it that, Knopf has decided to name it the Eldest
Limited Edition. It will be available on September 26, 2006. It includes
the Domia abr Wyrda (Ancient language for “Dominance of Fate”)- an
excerpt of the history of Alagaësia, a full color poster of the dragon Glaedr by
John Jude Palencar, an illustration of Brom’s ring done by Christopher Paolini,
and a complete list of characters, places, things, and dwarf clans. Also
included is an excerpt of Book III. It is a small segment of the second chapter.
